The Creative Way To Turn Old Mason Jars Into Handy Sewing Kits

If you're looking for clever ways to reuse old glass jars around the house and have a sewing hobby, this DIY will help you get organized and keep all your supplies right where you need them. With a Mason jar, hot glue, some scrap fabric, a piece of cardboard, and a bit of fiberfill or quilt batting, you can make a container for storing your sewing necessities with a pin cushion on the lid. This project is a super easy way to store your safety pins, needles, thread, scissors, measuring tape, and other tools compactly, and you'll always have a place to stick your pins at the ready.

To make a cuter sewing kit, you could paint the lid's ring or use ribbon to decorate the outside of your Mason jar. (It could even double as a needle holder.) However, using a pretty fabric for the cushion should make this DIY adorable all by itself. If you don't already have fiber fill on hand, you can find a bag at Michaels for around $4, or you might be able to rip up cotton balls or pads to use instead. This genius craft room organization hack is also super versatile and won't take up much space. For example, if all your sewing supplies don't fit in one large jar, you could use another small Mason jar to hold buttons and other accessories.

Crafting a Mason jar sewing kit

First, take the lid off your jar and set the outer ring aside. If the jar has been sitting around gathering dust, simply wipe it off. With the flat piece of the lid, trace a circle onto a piece of cardboard or cardstock and cut it out. You'll glue your fabric to this later. While you could attach the pin cushion directly onto the lid, this would leave your glued material exposed. Now, cut out a circle of fabric that's 1 to 2 inches wider than the middle part of your lid.

Lay out your fabric so that it's right side down, place your stuffing onto it, and then set the cardstock on top. The more fiber fill or batting you use, the taller and puffier your pin cushion will be. If you're having trouble shaping your cushion, set your project inside the ring of the lid to guide you, making sure the cardboard is pushed as far into the ring as possible. Hot glue the edges of the fabric onto the cardstock all the way around. When your pin cushion is finished, glue it on top of the flat piece of the lid. Finally, you can decorate the outside of your jar, fill it with your sewing supplies, and stick a few pins into your cushion lid. This simple hack can bring extreme organization to your sewing supplies and is an adorable addition to your craft room.
